Varkaus - ihan omanlainen
The town of Varkaus on the shores of Lake Suur-Saimaa is steeped in almost 300 years of industrial history. Welcome to a city of mechanical music, naive art and quacks, a Varkaus like no other!
The charming town of Varkaus is conveniently located on the main roads and it's easy for us to enjoy the laid-back Sámi way of life. Nature and Saimaa are part of the city centre, together with the unique local culture built around industry and architecture. Here you will find, for example, the Old Varkaus area, which is of great cultural and historical value, and the Taipale Canal, which is still used for inland waterway transport.
Just outside the city centre is the unique Kämäri nature area and the fishway which is the largest of its kind in Finlans, Ämmäkoski rapids.
We have many interesting museums in Varkaus, such as Finland's most postive Museum of Mechanical Music or the Taipale Canal Museum. The Museokeskus Konsti in Varkaus offers an imaginative look at the city's industrial history in its exhibitions.
We are also a colourful city of naïve art, where the Väinölä Art Centre has a long history of exhibitions of naïve art. Varkaus also offers memorable events throughout the year.
Let Varkaus surprise you with its own special kind of Varkaus and come and enjoy yourself as our guest!
