Varkaus – a town that lives and breathes industrial history, culture and the arts

Come and visit Varkaus, a stunning lakeside town on Lake Saimaa, which offers an unprecedented range of experiences and pleasures.

In the heart of the town, the new and already award-winning Varkaus Museum Centre Konsti, which opened its doors in spring 2024, awaits you. Konsti takes you on a journey through the history, present and future of Varkaus’s industry and its people. The museum centre also offers a diverse range of art, as well as the Children’s Workshop, designed for children and the young at heart, where you can play, get creative and go on adventures. You might even catch a glimpse of the mischievous Office Rat in Konsti’s factory setting.

The charm of Old Varkaus

From Konsti, it’s easy to set off to explore the town along the Old Varkaus Experience Trail. This route takes you through a nostalgic neighbourhood of wooden houses, once home to the ironworks’ labourers, officials and managers. Hidden amongst the wooden houses, you’ll find many delightful places to visit and stay, such as the Taideniitty Artists’ House, the Väinölä Art Centre, Warkhaus and Varkaus Church. The unique character of Old Varkaus is complemented by modern-day Varkaus, right next door, which you can experience on a walking tour with the quiet hum of the factory in the background.

Natural beauty and unforgettable experiences

In Varkaus, the lake scenery of Lake Saimaa surrounds the town from every direction. Oases in the town centre, such as Hertunranta, Itsenäisyydenpuisto and Kämäri, lead you, with their bridges and footpaths, all the way to the Taipale Canal. Boat traffic on the canal slows down in winter, but the old stone canal is well worth a visit all year round. This route is perfect for walking or cycling, and you can stop off at your leisure to enjoy the scenery. Along the way, you can admire the Ämmäkoski bypass channel, Finland’s largest natural route built for migratory fish to reach their spawning grounds.

Live and breathe Varkaus

Varkaus lives and breathes industry and its history. On the town’s streets, you can admire the work of several architects, not forgetting the most famous of them all, Alvar Aalto. Varkaus has plenty of specialist shops and service providers offering unique products and services. On the boulevard-like Kauppakatu, it’s well worth popping into the shops to pick up some lovely souvenirs and gifts, or to treat yourself to a local speciality.

Don’t forget the guided nature experiences and equipment hire, which will allow you to experience the Varkaus region from a whole new perspective.

Come and enjoy Varkaus in your very own way!
