Churches In The Varkaus Region
Varkauden pääkirkko
The main church in Varkaus, designed by architect Martti Paalanen, was completed on the eve of the Winter War in 1939. Painted by Professor Lennart Segerstråhle in 1953-1954, the altarpiece "Tulkoon Sinun valtakuntasi" is a remarkable work of art, covering an area of 240 square metres, making it one of the largest altarpieces in the Nordic countries.
The main church in Varkaus is open daily during the summer, but at other times only during events and by appointment.

The church also houses artefacts salvaged from the ruins of a wooden church that burned down in 1972. On display is a napkin made in the early 17th century.
