Pre-event for European Industrial Heritage Week

Come and celebrate Varkaus’s industrial heritage at the pre-event for European
Industrial Heritage Week on 11–12 September 2026! The programme includes guided
tours, boat trips and site presentations. European Industrial Heritage
Week forms part of the Varkaus Days 2026.

The European Heritage Label awarded to Varkaus by the European Commission has inspired efforts to showcase Varkaus’s unique environment, places, people and stories.

History and the present day will come together for the first time at the pre-event to Industrial Heritage Week, organised as part of the Varkaus Days on 11–12 September 2026. The programme is centred around the exhibits at the Konsti Museum Centre, which showcases Varkaus’s industrial heritage. The new guided tours include themed ‘Countess Boije’ tours at the Taipale Canal Museum – which played a key role in the development of the whole of Eastern Finland – as well as a city tour showcasing the town’s Aalto sites.

From 2027, the event week will expand to a national scale, and the aim going forward is to internationalise the event. Industrial Heritage Week forms part of the ‘Development of Industrial Tourism in Northern Savonia’ project, which aims to raise awareness of industrial tourism. The project has received EU co-funding from the Regional Council of Northern Savonia.
