Pirtinvirta is a great fishing spot in the middle of the city's amenities. The stream is stocked with rainbow trout and anglers can also hook pike, pike, perch and lake trout.

Ämmäkoski is a stream fishing spot. The easily accessible rapids are located between Päiviönsaari and Kämäri nature reserve, near Old Varkaus. In November 2022, Finland's largest natural bypass was completed in the water, along which endangered migratory fish will find their way back to their breeding grounds.
